EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber)
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber (EPDM) is a synthetic rubber used in single-ply roofs. It is easy to apply and installation is fast. It is a low-cost application and is expected to last 30 years but has been known to last 50 years. There are 3 application methods which are ballasted, mechanically attached and fully adhered.
Ballasted roofs are kept in place by big round stones or slabs. Mechanically attached roof coatings are kept in place using nails which is used in some installations where wind speed is not usually high. The problem is that the nails perforate the waterproof coating. However, if correctly fitted the coating will not leak. The fully adhered application method will provide the longest lasting out of the 3 methods.
The highest advanced EPDM has mostly eliminated shrinkage and still permits it to stretch up to 300% while flexing with the building during the different seasons.
