Roofing is one of the trades most associated with rogue traders in the UK, partly because work is often done after weather events when homeowners are vulnerable, and partly because roof access limits the ability to supervise work in progress. These steps reduce the risk substantially.

Professional Bodies

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC, nfrc.co.uk) lists member companies who are assessed for workmanship standards, insurance and financial stability. TrustMark-approved roofing contractors have been vetted against government-endorsed standards. Neither is foolproof, but both are more reliable than an unverified search result.

Quotes

Get three written quotes. Provide access to the roof area for inspection — any roofer quoting without inspecting the roof is guessing. The quote should specify: materials (brand, specification, colour), whether scaffolding is included, what underlying damage will be addressed, and what guarantees apply to the work and materials.

Red Flags

  • Knocking door unsolicited, especially after storms ("we noticed your roof...")
  • Requiring large cash payment upfront
  • Cannot provide a written quote
  • No public liability insurance (ask for certificate)
  • No fixed business address

Insurance Claims

For storm or accidental damage, contact your insurer before instructing significant repairs. Most buildings insurance covers roof damage. The insurer may send a loss adjuster to assess the claim. Instructing expensive repairs before the insurer approves them can complicate reimbursement.
