Hiring the wrong roofer can be an expensive mistake. Poor workmanship on a roof leads to ongoing leaks, structural damage, and the cost of having the job done again properly. This guide explains how to find someone worth trusting with your roof.
Word of mouth is still the most reliable way to find a good roofer. Ask neighbours who have had roofing work done, or ask a trusted builder or architect who they would use. If you cannot get a personal recommendation, look for verified reviews on Checkatrade or Trustpilot, and pay attention to reviews that mention follow-up service and how problems were handled.
The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) is the UK's largest roofing trade body. Members are vetted, insured, and must comply with a code of conduct. CORC (Confederation of Roofing Contractors) is another reputable organisation. Membership does not guarantee perfection, but it does mean there is a body to turn to if things go wrong.
Always get at least two or three quotes. Be specific about what you need and ask each roofer to itemise their quote. This makes it easier to compare and spots any roofer who is pricing significantly higher or lower than the others without obvious justification. A very low quote often means corners will be cut on materials or preparation.
For any significant roofing job, get a written contract covering scope, timeline, and payment terms. A deposit of up to 25 per cent is reasonable. Never pay the full amount upfront, and inspect the completed work before making the final payment. If scaffolding was erected, check that flashing, pointing, and all disturbed areas have been properly finished before it comes down.
